What this category covers

These are the gold coins issued by the Italian Republic for collectors, dedicated to monuments, artists, anniversaries and sporting events. Almost all are Proof (FS), a careful striking with fields polished like a mirror; a few are Uncirculated (FDC).

In lire, from 1993 to 2001

They are almost all diptychs: two coins of 100,000 and 50,000 lire issued together, often each with a different subject, as the name indicates.

• 1993-94, "Banca d'Italia": the diptych and the 50,000 lire coin on its own;
• 1996, Certosa di Pavia and Parma Baptistery;
• 1997, St Nicholas of Bari and Sant'Ambrogio;
• 1998, Torre del Mangia in Siena and San Giovanni degli Eremiti in Palermo;
• 2000, 700 years since the Jubilee of 1300 and Benvenuto Cellini;
• 2001, Pulpit of Sant'Andrea in Pistoia and Royal Palace of Caserta.

In euro, from 2003

• 50 and 20 euro diptychs of 2003 and 2004.
• "Europa delle Arti" (Europe of the Arts) series, 50 and 20 euro diptychs from 2005 to 2010. From 2007 the name gives the two countries the coins are dedicated to: Norway and Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, Hungary and Sweden. From 2006 there is also the 20 euro dedicated to Mendelsohn on its own.
• "Flora e Fauna" (Flora and Fauna) series, 50 and 20 euro diptychs from 2011 to 2016, with the subtitles Renaissance (2013), Neoclassicism and Rococo (2015), Contemporary Age (2016), and the 50 euro of 2012 on its own.
• 20 euro: 2006 Football World Cup (2004 and 2006 issues), Turin 2006 Winter Olympics (first, second and third issue), Treaties of Rome (2007), Andrea Palladio (2008), Guglielmo Marconi (2009), Caravaggio (2021).
• 50 euro: 2006 Winter Olympics, first and second issue.
• 10 euro of the Roman Emperors series: Hadrian (2017), Trajan (2018), Augustus (2019), Marcus Aurelius (2020), Constantine (2021); and the 10 euro Trevi Fountain (2022).

The gold coins of the Vatican City State are in the Vatican Gold category.

Collector's gold, not investment gold

These are collector's coins: their price also depends on subject, year and grade. If you are looking for coins whose price follows gold, see Investment Gold Coins.

Proof coins show fingerprints and scratches easily: it is best not to handle them with bare hands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FS and FDC?

FDC (Uncirculated) indicates a coin that has never circulated, with a normal finish. FS (Proof) is a special striking for collectors, with fields polished like a mirror.

Do you have the same issues in silver too?

The commemorative silver 5 and 10 euro coins are in Italian Republic Silver; the circulating lira coins and the mint sets are in Italian Republic.

Can I collect the coins in person?

Yes, free of charge, at our premises in Verbania or in Milan. Otherwise we send them by insured shipping, priced according to the order value.

Do you buy gold coins of the Republic?

Yes. If you have any to sell, write to us with a few photos or call in at one of our two premises.
