Italian Republic

What the category brings together

Here you will find the coins in lire of the Italian Republic, founded in 1946, up to 2001, before the changeover to the euro in 2002. The single coins for sale are almost all FDC (Uncirculated): never circulated, with no signs of wear.

• 20, 50 and 100 Lire from 1955 to 1966;
• the 1946 set and the complete 1947 set, listed as very rare;
• the 1957 500 Lire pattern with the “bandierine controvento” (flags blowing against the wind), listed as extremely rare;
• the annual Mint sets from 1968 to 1987, gathered in the subcategory Mint Sets.

What a pattern is

A pattern is a coin struck to test the design and the dies before the final issue, not for circulation. The 1957 500 Lire piece is a pattern of this kind: on the item page you will find the photo and the grade.
