Investment Gold Coins

What investment gold is

Under Italian law (Italian Law 7/2000) and EU legislation, a gold coin is "investment gold" when it:

• has a fineness of at least 900 thousandths;
• was struck after 1800;
• is or has been legal tender in its country of origin;
• is sold at a price that does not exceed the value of the gold it contains by more than 80%.

The sale of investment gold is exempt from VAT (Presidential Decree 633/1972, art. 10 no. 11). Unlike collector's coins, the value of these coins depends almost entirely on the gold they contain, not on rarity or grade.

How the price is set

The price of each coin is calculated on the gold price and is updated with the market. When you confirm your order the price is locked: you pay by bank transfer in the following days and the amount does not change, even if gold rises or falls in the meantime.

Gold prices can rise and fall: the price paid today does not indicate what the coin will be worth in the future.

How much gold each coin contains

For the same gold price, what counts is the weight of fine gold: the weight of the coin multiplied by its fineness.

One-ounce coins (Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Eagle) hold more gold in a single piece. Marenghi and sovereigns are smaller pieces: they let you buy, and one day sell, smaller amounts of gold.

Frequently asked questions

Can the price change after I have ordered?

No. The price is locked when you confirm your order and stays the same even if you pay by bank transfer in the following days.

Can I see the coins and collect them in person?

Yes. You can collect your order free of charge at our premises in Verbania or in Milan. Otherwise we send it by insured shipping, at a rate that depends on the order value.

How do these differ from collector's gold coins?

Investment coins are valued mainly for the gold they contain. With collector's coins, year, mint, rarity and state of preservation also count: for these see the categories Italian Gold Coins and Foreign Gold Coins.

Do you also buy gold coins?

Yes. If you have coins to sell, write to us with a few photos or call in at one of our two premises.
