How to read dates and names

The names in quotation marks (“Aquila araldica”, “Aratrice”, “Fascione”, “Littore”, “Ape”) are the ones collectors use for the different coin types. “Coppiola” indicates the 100 and 50 Lire coins of the same year sold together.

On the coins struck during the Fascist period there is a Roman numeral next to the year: it is the year of the Fascist era, counted from October 1922. That is why you find, for example, “1931 IX” or “1936 XIV”.

Weights and fineness

For gold struck up to 1927 and for silver lire up to 1917 these weights and fineness apply:

The gold of 1931–1937 has different weights and is not included in the table. Nor are the silver 5, 10 and 20 Lire coins listed here.

Grade and rarity

Here the price depends mainly on year, grade and rarity. The codes range from FDC (Uncirculated, never circulated) to qFDC, SPL (Extremely Fine), qSPL, BB (Very Fine) and MB (Fine). Rarity follows the scale of the catalogues, from R1 (rare) to R5 (of the highest rarity). Some pieces are graded and encapsulated by NGC: the MS grade indicates an uncirculated coin.
